Muddy pops into this Grade II traditional pub, opposite Kenilworth Castle, for a family Sunday lunch. Here’s the verdict…

Is there anything more British than a delicious Sunday Roast with your nearest and dearest? Muddy’s Georgina Forsythe heads to this popular Grade II listed family-friendly boozer for just that. Yorkshire puds ahoy!

Location

The Clarendon Arms is ideally situated next at the end of a very pretty row of cottages with great views across to one of Warwickshire’s most stunning historic attractions, Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden and is a stone’s throw from Abbey Fields which offers the perfect post-roast countryside walk. It has a very homely, family vibe and we were given the biggest welcome by the friendly staff.

The Vibe

We’re talking traditional Grade II listed country pub here with a modern twist – comfy chairs, original features. stained glass windows and log burners. The pub was built in the early 1900s. Like us, the pub was busy with couples and families enjoying some much needed down time with their families while enjoying some good, honest homemade pub grub. There’s an outdoor patio to sit and enjoy the sun in warmer weather and upstairs there’s a private room upstairs seating up to 60 for parties and special occasions.

This independent pub has been owned by the same family for 30 years. It’s currently managed by company director Charlotte McCoster and head chef Ryan New who also jointly run the small, rustic restaurant Harringtons-on-the- Hill, a few doors away in a very pretty bow fronted cottage. Together they employ around 40 staff and work closely with Stratford College employing catering/hospitality apprentices. Watch out the imminent launch of their brand-new website.

Scoff and Quaff

The lamb roast

The menu offers a good range of British cuisine, including crispy breaded brie with spicy tomato chutney, salmon and dill fish cake as some of the starters and anything from a 10oz gammon steak and a steak and ale pie to The Lady Godiva Burger….as it comes with nothing on (very clever!). They do great value-daily deals on tasty pub grub – including a Burger Night (£10 for a Burger & a Drink) and a Steak Night (two Rump Steaks & a Bottle of wine for £26) and have a well-stocked bar.

As my family and love our sweets we opted for a main followed by dessert….none of which disappointed. I ordered the vegetarian sausage with Yorkshire pudding, my husband the lamb roast with all the trimmings while the kids ordered fish and chips – and ketchup of course! The food arrived and both presentation and quantity was spot on.

Veggie sausage and Yorkshire pud

It was finished off very nicely with homemade chocolate brownies and ice cream and apple pie.

All-in-all, a very positive experience and the perfect place to finish off the weekend with my family. One of the best Sundays we’ve enjoyed together in a while.

Out-and-About

Plenty to see and do nearby. You could easily make a day of it at Kenilworth Castle and enjoy the beautiful medieval ruins. There’s also Abbey Fields – the perfect spot to walk off that Sunday Roast while taking in the pretty Warwickshire scenery. Kenilworth itself is a perfect town in which to explore with its very own Arts Festival in September starting this week – see what’s on here. A short stroll from The Clarendon is Kenilworth High Street which is good for a browse with eclectic shops, and indie boutiques including an excellent bookshop.

The Muddy Verdict

Good for: Families with children, walkers, couples looking to explore, do some shopping, and enjoy some Warwickshire heritage.  It’s unpretentious here, and very dog friendly.

Not for: Diners looking for Michelin-star food. This is good, honest pub grub!

The Damage: Very reasonable indeed. Starters priced anything from £2.75 for garlic bread up to £6.95 for fish cake and mains range from £9 to £13.
